The project
The Epping to Thornleigh Third Track project added a third track along the Main North line between Epping and Thornleigh, separating freight from passenger services on a shared section of the network. FR2 contributed for Transport for NSW.
Adding a track to an operating corridor is a staging problem before it is a construction problem: earthworks, structures, track and systems all have to be built alongside live running lines, with each stage handed over in a state that lets services continue. Freight paths add a second timetable to protect.
